Tap Into The Hidden Job Market
The hidden job market refers to the large number of jobs that are filled through unadvertised sources. Typically over 50% of all jobs filled annually fall into this category. To tap into this market, you must understand that a job is actually a specific need or problem that has been formalized into a position description. To uncover this market, you need to speak directly to the hiring managers living with the problems and demonstrate to them that you can provide a solution. Unfortunately, most job seekers have no clue what problems they can solve because they are task focused, not result focused. This requires a shift in thinking. You must convert your mindset from that of an employee to an entrepreneur. Success at finding the job you want means determining the problems you're good at solving. You need to change how you see yourself and the role you can play. It means making the investment in yourself and adjusting your approach to promote the brand called “You.”
    Parents Helping Their Kids
One of the consequences of the current job market is the well documented fact, at least anecdotally, that more young adults and recent college graduates are moving back home to live with their parents. After helping their children get an education, many parents are now faced with the prospect of providing continuing financial support. This is certainly not the scenario that was planned by all concerned. Given this development, it makes sense for parents to consider investing in job search assistance for their kids. In the long run, helping their children become more effective job seekers will cost parents a lot less, both financially and emotionally.
    Creating A Web Presence
A Career Journal article in today’s WSJ talks about creating a web presence from scratch. In today’s environment, job seekers must expand the ways in which they search. While it may seem overwhelming and maybe unnecessary for an accomplished professional, setting up and maintaining an online presence is critical to finding the job you want. The article mentions several key points for consideration.

    • Claim your name on social networking sites before someone else does. Also, purchase the domain for your name.

    • Practice prudence. Limit yourself to three social networking sites and definitely include LinkedIn as one of them.

    • Choose connections wisely. Your network should be about quality, not quantity.

    • Be consistent. Update your profile regularly and stay true to your personal brand.

    Your Personal Website
Publishing your own website provides several advantages for the typical job seeker. First of all, it provides an opportunity to market your "brand" through the use of technology - and the importance of taking advantage of every possible means of making connections with people looking for your skills. A secondary aspect is the impact your website can have on your Google Quotient rating. As a job seeker, it is extremely important that you find ways to positively influence google searches, which are certain to be conducted about you. Your personal website will go a long way to influence what search engines produce when researching your name. Your experience, qualifications, and interests are public, and the more you market your personal brand on-line, the greater the potential for successful links.
    Relationship Marketing
In a recent Philadelphia Business Journal column, Terry Brock writes that Relationship Marketing is the most important activity we can do in business. In addition to “real communication,” whether in person or by phone, we can also use technology to stay close to prospects, customers, and important stakeholders including hiring managers.

Whatever the medium, it is about providing value to your audience. If your Twitter message is nothing more than what you had for breakfast, you deserve to be ignored. But, if you are sharing information that can be helpful or of interest to some of your followers, then you will be viewed favorably.

All of the social networking services are about connecting with people. Whether it’s a video on You Tube, a discussion on LinkedIn or a Tweet, a dedicated Relationship Marketer understands the power of all these tools. They also understand that’s it not about blowing their own horn, but it’s more about trying to help others.

Brock notes that the bottom line is being committed to become a true Relationship Marketer with a genuine care to solve other people’s problems. Applying this principle in your job search means utilizing all forms of communication to demonstrate that you are someone who provides value and stands out from the crowd.
